A Short Guide in Action Research
Published in Paperback by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (06 November, 2001)
Author: Andrew P. Johnson
Average review score:

Excellent for students and practitioners
Teachers, administrators, human service personnel are often encouraged to be engaged in action research. However, obtaining a sound, thorough but readable text to assist such professionals in conducting action research has been very difficult. This book fills this void wonderfully. The book lays out the steps of action research, provides practical examples all in a way that is scholastically sound but engaging and interesting reading. No mean feat for any book on research! I would highly recommend this for working practitioners and for guides for students involved in masters and even doctoral projects associated with action research. An excellent resource!!

practical, well-written, concise.
Finally, a book about action research that gets right to the point. It provides a good overview of action research in the context of other research paradigms. It describes many very simple and practical methods for collecting data. It can be used with a thesis or dissertation as well as short research projects.

My 11-yr. old daughter loves this book
My daughter would check this book out of the library on a regular basis. She loves this book and asked for it for Christmas, but I didn't think we could get it since it was out of print. I was so happy to be able to buy it used (although it looks absolutely brand new) and the photos are wonderful. She gets lots of enjoyment out of this book.

Simon & Schuster Children's Guide to Birds
My son is an avid animal lover. He finds this book to be fascinating. He has checked it out of the school library and keeps renewing it to explore new birds. The book has beautiful color pictures of loads of common and uncommon birds grouped by category (i.e. waterbirds, songbirds, seabirds, owls, etc.). This book is very well done and perfect for the elementary school child.

Simple Fare: Rediscovering the Pleasures of Real Food

This book makes you want to cook!
Fabulous cookbook. Recipes are preceded by info on where the recipe came from, suitable variations, the enjoyability of the making and eating of the dish, and ideas on what to pair with it for a satisfying meal. Many of the introductions are sheer poetry, making you want to try almost every dish. The chicken paprika and german meatballs are family favorites now - EXCELLENT recipes. If you enjoy cooking, you MUST add this book to your collection. It's one of the most treasured in ours, and we have, literally, hundreds. You'll not be disappointed with this book!

Wonderful writing, good food.
If you like good prose and good food, this is the book for you. Johnson is just an average guy trying to put dinner on the table.

Sing Alongs: Helping Children Learn to Read
Published in Paperback by Literacy Links (04 January, 1999)
Authors: Marcia M. Ardis and Linda Johnson
Average review score:

"What a great sing-along for teachers and parents!"
Marcia Ardis does a wonderful job integrating music and the learning of the print word. This resource (Sing-Alongs) is vital for pre-school and elementary teachers. She takes common tunes that children and adults have grown to know and love and designs creative jingles that help make learning to read fun! Research has proven that children need to speak, hear, sing, and say the printed word in order for it to be a learned skill-Marcia Ardis has provided that in this "catchy" title. All the "goods" are there within her book-have fun!

Kept my students excited about reading !
These songs & poems hold young children's interests & are great for home practice. I can teach a decoding skill at school and the children take it home and practice while reading / singing to their parents. This is NOT homework to them!

Sistah to Sistah
Sister Strength is a collection of devotions, inspirations and life stories from one sister to another. A wonderful dear loving life-long friend presented me with this book for Kwanzaa as the new Millennium approached, (thanks Dr.George-Harold Jennings), we both new I needed to roll into 2000 with the love of my sistahs and my Lord! These daily meditations give sisters the opportunity to breathe that sweet breath of life and know that they are loved, and revered for the contributions we make daily through individual and collective efforts. I encourage sisters young and old to melt into these pages, to laugh , to cry and to know that our creator smiles on us every day, just because, "That which you are seekin is seeking you"..p. 49, SISTER STRENGTH! Thank you Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson-Cook.

Very inspirational for all women from all walks of life.
The devotional offers a compilation of experiences from a diverse group of African American women who come from many walks of life. You do not have to be African American to experience its spiritual and heart-warming value.

What I enjoyed most is that there were many pieces I could personally relate to. Those that I could not personally relate to I could share with a friend who could but still be enriched by the works in and of themselves.

It is wonderful to read a devotional that is so personal because it allows you to reflect on your life and that of your friends and family. The contributors reveal themselves when sharing their experiences.

Sister Strength is a great follow up to Rev. Johnson-Cook's "Sister to Sister".

Great for the bedside!

Six O'Clock Solutions

Hands-Down Our Favorite!
This cookbook is fabulous. My husband and I rely on it, and have yet to find a bad recipe. I've just taken my copy in to a print shop to have it ring bound because it's beginning to fall apart from years of use. I keep hoping that the Vancouver Sun Times will publish a sequel. If you like healthy, easy, excellent cooking, this is one not to miss.

I use this cookbook again and again
_Six O'Clock Solutions_, a collection of main dish recipes, comes from the _Vancouver Sun_ test kitchen. To be included, a dish must take no longer than 30 minutes to prepare, from start to finish. The recipes are easy and forgiving,.. and draw on worldwide influences -- Italian-style pasta dishes, Asian-inspired chicken sauces, French seafood stews, etc. Assuming you have a reasonably well-stocked pantry (balsamic vinegar shouldn't be a stranger), you'll find that you can prepare most of the recipes with ingredients you already have on hand. Best so far? It's a tossup between Glazed Apricot-Walnut Chicken and Chicken Breasts with Mushrooms and Creamy Mustard Sauce.

A chart at the back of the book shows which recipes are low-fat, which are especially fast to prepare, which are good candidates for entertaining, and which have the highest KAF (kid acceptance factor). Each recipe is accompanied by suggested side dishes.

The _Vancouver Sun_ has also produced a cookbook called _Five Star Food_. I hope they continue the theme and write cookbooks featuring four, three, two, and one!

Soissons 1918 (C.A. Brannen Series, No. 3)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Douglas V. Johnson and Rolfe L., Jr. Hillman
Average review score:

Lucid Analysis of the American Army's Performance in WW1
The Battle of Soissons was a joint US-French effort to defeat an impending German offensive by launching a counteroffensive of their own. As the authors noted, "this battle was the first true measure of the AEF's ability to fight at the basic organizational level, the division. Everything up to this battle consisted of battalion and regimental fights, with the exception of the 2nd Division fight at Chateau Thierry. That battle involved the division in offensive operations, but it began as a meeting engagement - an emergency stopgap operation. Soissons was supposed to be a carefully planned deliberate attack." The book is well organized and beautifully written. The authors analyze the actions of the various units, key commanders, the influence of terrain, criticality of communications, integration of artillery and infantry, as well as a host of other factors. Their narrative regarding the difference in tactics between the experienced French and neophyte American Army is equally instructive. However, what truly distinguishes this book from others is the clear prose and lucid explanation of events taking place on an all too confusing battlefield. I strongly recommend it to World War I "buffs" as well as novice readers interested in learning something about the "War to End All Wars". Of special note is the fascinating examination of the actions of various brigade and regimental commanders, as well as senior officers within the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) high command. Clearly, Soissons 1918 does not ignore the "human element" in combat. This aspect alone elevates the book above most of the recently published works dealing with WW1.

Soissons 1918
On July 18-21, 1918, American and French divisions fought and won the bitter Battle of Soissons. This critical battle was the start of the Aisne-Marne Offensive and marked the turning point of WW1. Soissons was the turning point because the Germans were unable to regain the offense and the Allies began their offensive operations that ended the war.

Colonels Hillman and Johnson's fine work, Soissons 1918, is a detailed study of the Battle of Soissons but, more importantly, it is the only the book available on this critical battle. The authors, both West Point graduates and decorated combat veterans, present a thorough analysis of the inexperienced U.S. Army, a very detailed accounting of the 3-day battle, and a critical look at the command leadership during the battle.

The authors did exhaustive research of the primary and secondary documentation at the U.S. Army of Military History Institute, the U.S. Army Center of Military History, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. The bibliography and index reflects not only U.S. Army but French and German sources, as well as personal papers of the battle's veterans-survivors. For U.S. Army historians and military history buffs, this book is a must read.

The authors' writing skills make this scholarly work an "exciting, easy" read, editorially well-written, even though the battle was a desperate, bitter and bloody affair. The Texas A&M University Press did a fine job publishing the book: providing numerous photographs, and the all-important maps for a military history work.

This book is particularly important to anyone interested in the U.S. Army's most famous infantry divisions,;the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division - the "Indianheads," and the 1st U.S. Infantry Division- the "Big Red One, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the French Army's French Foreign Legion. The Marine Corps's Marine Brigade, the well-known victors of Belleu Wood, was attached to the 2nd Infantry Division. Two companion books of note, George B. Clark's Devil Dogs: Fighting Marines in WW1, C.A. Brannen's Over There: A Marine in the Great War, provide additional coverage of the battle.

If you, the AMAZON reader, need more persuasion, noted military historians and writers have enthusiastically endorsed the book. Dr. Edward "Mac" Coffman, the renown author of The War to End all Wars, said the book is "an important work." LTG Harold G. Moore, Jr. (USMA'45), the author of We Were Soldiers Once and Young, said of the book: "Superbly researched account of American military leadership and unit actions in the Soissons blood bath...A 'must read' for students and historians of WW1."

Sparkling Harvest: The Seasons of the Vine

Sparkling Harvest - A sparkling book
This autobiographical and historical look at Schramsberg and its important role as the leader in American Sparkling Wine. It is written by the owners, Jack and Jamie Davies, in a down to earth, easy to undertstand style. Learn about their vision and pioneering determination to do something that had yet to be done in America, to produce Sparkling wine made the traditional way as done in Champagne, France. The book is filled with wonderful stories, delicious recipes and gorgeous photgraphy. Jim Alinder, demonstrates his Ansel Adams prowess with the camera. This tasteful picture book covers all seasons and aspects of the making of great Sparkling wine in both color and black and white photography.

This book is a must have for any coffee table or wine enthusiast.

A gorgeously illustrated story of Schramsberg Vineyards.
This coffee-table book actually makes great reading! It has splendid color and duotone pictures of the winery, the caves, the vineyards and the surrounding Napa Valley landscape in all four seasons of the year. In addition to telling how they transformed a mountain-side wilderness back into the Napa Valley's leading producer of fine champagnes (President Nixon took several cases of Schramsberg champagne to China to toast Chou en Lai), the Davies have included excerpts from Robert Louis Stevenson's "Silverado Squatters" describing his visit in its heyday 100 years earlier, and the story of how Jacob Schram, an imigrant German barber, was able to save enough to buy, clear and plant his mountain vineyard and dig the caves that have now been expanded to house more than 2,000,000 bottles fermenting today to become tomorrow's finest champagnes. The chapter with Jamie's collection of special recipes and menus for fine dining make this more than just a book for lovers of fine wine and great photographs!

Adversity is not the end!
This is a wonderful book! It made me cry and laugh at the same time. The author presents adversity not as the end of our lives but as an opportunity to grow and learn. The book is easy to read but at the same time very profound and inspirational. I would recommend it to anyone who is going through difficult times. The book would help people to be joyful in the midst of adversity.
